The Board of Trustees of the Tom Bean Independent School District held the regular monthly board meeting on Monday, April 19, 2010. President, Joe Jaska called the meeting to order at 7:00PM. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and Steve Book led the invocation.
The minutes of March 22, 2010 along with the Financial Reports were approved as presented.
Student of the Month recognition and plaques were presented to the recipients
from each campus. Teachers selected the candidates based on their attitude, behavior,
and character. The recipients included: Dylan Avila (EL); Lane Williams (MS); and Sara Curtis (HS).
Special recognitions were presented to the Tom Bean High School FCCLA State Champions. Their teacher, Ms. Sharon Stephens, guided Taylor Jordan, Audrey Morrow, Cheyene Arrington, and Sara Vincent to attend Nationals this year in Chicago, Illinois. Their projects were presented to the School Board which consisted of the Star Program and the Recycling Project. Each student was presented with an award for their dedication and hard work from the Board of Trustees.
Ms. Maggie Lutringer, 8th grader at Tom Middle School, was also presented with an award from the School Board. She was honored at the Lone Star Youth Leadership Council in Hurst, Texas. The young leader created her project “Pantry” to organize a food drive. She invited two other local schools to join the effort. Maggie collected 1,501 canned goods that helped many families in need. She was only one of twenty-nine members across the state of Texas who was honored.
During a recent Coordinated Review Effort (CRE) audit from the Texas Department of Agriculture, the TBISD food service department was awarded the “Excellent” award which instills the importance of the 3E’s of Healthy Living – Education, Exercise, and Eating Right. Ms. Mary Goff, Food Service Director, along with our nutrition department staff was clearly committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of our students. They exemplify the highest standards of caring and service by teaching children the relationship between proper eating and good health.
The Tom Bean ISD Board of Trustees was presented with a plaque from the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) for their support and efforts to the children of Tom Bean.
Each of the campus principals gave a report with the total enrollment,
attendance, discipline, number of walk-through evaluations, number of teacher
absences, newsletters, and current events for February.
John Orozco gave the curriculum report along with Tal Sanders’ report concerning the Spring Season sports updates.
The Board approved the School Calendar as well as approving the Textbook Adoption list for 2010-2011.
The transfer fee was revisited and approved to eliminate the transfer fee charged to out of District students. The TIPS (Inter-Local Cooperative Purchasing Agreement) was approved to allow purchasing of educational items.
The NutriKids program will receive an update which enhances our Lunchroom Program. The Board approved the purchase of a central office building, new football field lights, and two new school buses for next year. These items will improve the TBISD facilities and the transportation department.
Our focus has been on curriculum and instruction to create higher expectations for our students academically. With inclusion provided throughout the District, the Board approved stipends for all teachers that seek additional certification.
The Board approved the resignation of Gabby Probst, Elementary teacher, the hiring of Christopher Preskitt, Secondary Science teacher, Twilene Sanders, Middle School Social Studies/Computer Lab teacher, and two additional instructional aides.

Included in her report were the results of the sick leave procedure instituted in August, the results of the technology audit, and the comparison of the 2009 and the 2010 electricity bill. In addition, the Ag barn demolition, and the vision of District Funds were discussed. A plan for the Elementary School was shared with the Tom Bean ISD Board of Trustees.
